The hardware

Super Nintendo

The Super Nintendo's audio subsystem, designed by Ken Kutaragi before he went on to lead the PlayStation. A dedicated SPC700 CPU drives the S-DSP: eight channels of compressed samples with hardware envelopes, pitch modulation and a built-in echo unit, all working from 64KB of private RAM. That echo is why so much SNES music sounds as though it were recorded in a room.
