SNK's arcade and home platform, built on Yamaha's YM2610: four FM channels, a three-voice SSG, and two separate ADPCM sections that do most of the real work. ADPCM-A plays six channels of drums and effects from ROM at a fixed 18.5kHz, while ADPCM-B adds one variable-rate voice for bass and vocals. That sample-heavy design is why Neo Geo music sounds closer to a recording than to synthesis, and why the MVS cabinet stayed in arcades from 1990 until 2004.
